The reopening of Kamala Theatre in Vadapalani recently witnessed actors and politicians coming together on one platform.
D. Napoleon, Union Minister of State , expressed happiness over the fact that the owners had converted a theatre into two screens rather than convert it to a shopping mall.
Mayor M. Subramanian thanked theatre owners in the city for showing slides depicting the need to implement source segregation of garbage. Actor Kamal Haasan, who inaugurated the renovated theatre, said that it was actor Sivaji Ganesan who told him to break the rules.
“I used to act out lines from his films but he would tell me not to repeat what he did but go on to the next step.”
Theatre owner V.N. Chidambaram said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi inaugurated the hall in 1972. The first film to be screened in the theatre was ‘Sange Muzhangu.’ He said that the family chose not to convert the theatre into a shopping mall or sell the land as they loved running the theatre. “Though my sons, Valliappan, Nagappan and Ganesh, are in different businesses, they have worked on renovating the theatre,” he added.
Information Minister Parithi Illamvazhuthi, actors Vijay, Vivek, Manorama, film producer AVM Saravanan, and Additional Director-General of Police R.Sekar spoke.
